ATP Tour Recap (Edition #1)
Covering last week's ATP tournaments in Acapulco, Dubai, and Santiago
Welcome to Men’s Tennis Center! In this edition, we will be recapping the major results and notable storylines from the recent ATP tournaments held in Acapulco, Dubai, and Santiago during the week of February 26, 2024.
Acapulco (ATP 500)
Champion: Alex de Minaur [3] (8th career title)
Runner-Up: Casper Ruud [6]
Final Summary:
De Minaur def. Ruud 6-4 6-4 in the final, successfully defending his title from Acapulco in 2023. The match lasted 1 hour and 57 minutes.
Prior to the final, De Minaur breezed through his first two matches, but was then pushed to a deciding third set in victories over Stefanos Tsitsipas (QF) and Jack Draper (SF).
De Minaur finishes the tournament with a win-loss record of (15-4) on the season, which is good for the second-most match wins only behind Sebastian Baez (16).
Other Tournament Notes:
Alexander Zverev [1] was upset in the first round by Daniel Altmaier 6-3 3-6 6-3.
Felix Auger-Aliassime's difficult season continued, losing in the first round to Flavio Cobolli (Q) 2-6 6-3 6-2.
Dubai (ATP 500)
Champion: Ugo Humbert [5] (6th career title)
Runner-Up: Alexander Bublik [7]
Final Summary:
Humbert def. Bublik 6-4 6-3 in a relatively straightforward final in which which lasted 1 hour and 25 minutes.
En route to the final, Humbert picked up two victories over Top 10 opponents against Hubert Hurkacz [3] (QF) and Daniil Medvedev [1] (SF).
Hubert (#14) and Bublik (#20) both reached new career high rankings following the tournament.
Other Tournament Notes:
Andrey Rublev was defaulted late in the 3rd set of an intense semifinal against Bublik for verbal abuse towards a linesperson. In the days since, he successfully appealed the ruling with the ATP, and had his prize money and ranking points from the event reinstated. Despite the appeal, he is still required to pay a fine for the unsportsmanlike incident.
Denis Shapovalov was defeated in the first round by Andy Murray 4-6 7-6(5) 6-3. Shapovalov continues to struggle finding his form after a ~5 month injury layoff following Wimbledon in 2023. His record in main draw matches on tour this season is now 1-6.
Santiago (ATP 250)
Champion: Sebastian Baez [2] (6th career title)
Runner-Up: Alejandro Tabilo [4]
Final Summary:
Baez def. Tabilo 3-6 6-0 6-4 in a competitive final which which lasted 2 hours and 14 minutes.
Baez has now won a title in two consecutive weeks, following his triumph at last week's ATP 500 event at Rio de Janeiro.
Baez finishes the tournament with a 16 tour level wins on the season, which is the most of any player.
Baez (#19) and Tabilo (#39) both reached new career high rankings following the tournament.
Other Tournament Notes:
Corentin Moutet (Q) had an excellent week, winning two matches in the qualifying draw, followed by three matches in the main draw, including a marquee victory 7-6(5) 7-6(3) over Nicolas Jarry [1] in the quarterfinal round. His week ended in a tight semifinal defeat to Tabilo 4-6 6-4 7-5.
Joao Fonseca [WC] was defeated in first round by Thiago Agustin Tirante 7-5 7-6(3). The 17 year-old Brazilian received a wild card entry into the tournament and played well, but was not able to follow up on his quarterfinal run at last week's ATP 500 event at Rio de Janeiro.
