ATP Tour Recap (Edition #2)

Covering last week's ATP tournament in Indian Wells

Welcome to Men’s Tennis Center! In this edition, we will be recapping the major results and notable storylines from the recent ATP tournament held in Indian Wells starting on March 6, 2024.

Indian Wells (ATP 1000)

Champion: Carlos Alcaraz [2] (13th career title)
Runner-Up: Daniil Medvedev [4]
Final Summary:
  • Alcaraz def. Medvedev 7-6(5) 6-1 in the final, successfully defending his title from Indian Wells in 2023. The match lasted 1 hour and 42 minutes.

  • Medvedev broke Alcaraz’s serve early on and led 3-0 in the opening set, but Alcaraz largely dominated the match from that point onwards.

  • This is Alcaraz’s first title of the 2024 season. His performance overall this season has been strong, but perhaps slightly below the ultra-high standards he has led tour-followers to expect of him.

  • The final was a rematch of last year’s championship match at Indian Wells, which Alcaraz also won in straight sets over Medvedev 6-3 6-2.

Other Tournament Notes:
  • Both semifinal matches were very high-quality, tightly contested affairs. On the top half of the draw, Medvedev defeated Tommy Paul [17] 1-6 7-6(3) 6-2, ending Paul’s 2nd career run to the semifinal round of an ATP 1000 event. On the bottom half of the draw, Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner [3] 1-6 6-3 6-2 in a match that finally handed Sinner his first loss of the 2024 season.

  • In a major upset, Novak Djokovic [1] was defeated in the Round of 32 by Luca Nardi [LL] 6-4 3-6 6-3. Nardi (now ranked a career-high #96) played well, but Djokovic was clearly in poor form, having also struggled in his Round of 64 match against Aleksandar Vukic before eking out a three-set win 6-2 5-7 6-3.

  • Rafael Nadal was scheduled to make his return from injury at Indian Wells in the first round against Milos Raonic, but Nadal withdrew the day before his opening match, saying he did not feel he was in good enough form to compete at the event.
